Description
After 1982, no Muslim has become the Chief Minister except in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdul Rehman Antulay was the last Chief Minister who became from Maharashtra in 1982. Muslim leadership is rarely seen at the top in Congress politics, but one leader in Rajasthan was Barkatullah Khan, who became the chief minister of the state, Khan was a friend of Feroze Gandhi and was the only person who addressed Indira Gandhi as Bhabhijan. Barkatullah Khan alias Pyare Miyan belonged to a business family of Jodhpur. As interesting as his Hindu-Muslim love story is, the story of his becoming the chief minister is wrapped in the best of coincidences. He had never thought of becoming his chief minister even in his dreams. But due to sister-in-law, the news of making him CM was received in London, which Indira Gandhi herself gave him a phone call in London. Khan was born on October 25, 1920, in a Jodhpur business family, and was fondly called Pyare Miyan. He went to Lucknow to study law, where he met Feroze Gandhi and there also met his collegemate Usha Mehta. Later on, his meeting with Feroze turned into friendship while Usha’s meeting became life’s companion. This friendship later became a strong foundation of Barkatullah Khan’s political journey.
